Organising search information task

First, choose the best three sources found in the previous task
Using whatever software or tool you think appropriate, record the following information about those sites:

site 1
URL. http://www.maiaw.com/anteater/
author, maia@alumni.brown.edu
institution, http://www.brown.edu/
blurb/ summary / screen shot (this can be a direct copy of an appropriate abstract or introductory paragraph on the site: but make sure you record and reference it as such)

site 2
URL. http://www.anteater.com.au/
author, unknown
institution, anteater environmental services
blurb/ summary / screen shot (this can be a direct copy of an appropriate abstract or introductory paragraph on the site: but make sure you record and reference it as such)

site 3
URL. http://aft.sourceforge.net/
author, Apache Jakarta Project
institution, Apache Jakarta Project
blurb/ summary / screen shot (this can be a direct copy of an appropriate abstract or introductory paragraph on the site: but make sure you record and reference it as such)

LOG ENTRY:
I used google to find the above websites and then used paint shop pro to do a screen capture of the websites. I then uploaed them to my blog

I hope everyone had a great Christmas day and didn't eat to much :)

Module 4
search engine task

1. Choose your most commonly used Internet search engine and do a search with words of your choosing
LOG ENTRY:
record the first hit and number of hits in your learning log

Google search for anteater
http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=anteater&btnG=Google+Search&meta=
First Result
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anteater
Number of Hits
Results 1 - 10 of about 795,000 for anteater [definition]. (0.05 seconds)

2. Using copernicus or similar, set it up to search at least three search engines (including one that will search the 'deep web') and repeat exactly the same search
LOG ENTRY:
record the number of hits in your learning log, and compare to your first search. What differences did you notice? Why? Which search, on first glance gave you the most promising results?

Copernic Search Result for the word Anteater
http://ws.copernic.com/copern/ws/results/Web/anteater/1/417/topnavigation/Relevance/iq=true/zoom=off/_iceUrlFlag=7?_IceUrl=true

First Result
http://www.calibex.com/anteater-toys/zzcalibex2zB1z0--search-html
Number of Hits
Results: 1 - 20 of 72

3. save at least the first 5 hits of both searches
google 5
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anteater
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_Anteater
http://www.maiaw.com/anteater/
http://www.anteater.com.au/
http://aft.sourceforge.net/

copernic 5
http://www.calibex.com/anteater-toys/zzcalibex2zB1z0--search-html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anteater
http://www.maiaw.com/anteater/
http://aft.sourceforge.net/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_Anteater

Notes on search google vs copernic
Google returned the most hits, but this included links of no use or little help, where as copernic returned less results, but they were on topic and no rubbish links. On first glance copernic gave the best results

Boolean searching task

Taking the same key words of your last search, think about how you would best search for the following:
the biggest number of hits relating to these key words
information most relevant to what you ACTUALLY wanted to look for!
information coming only from university sources

LOG ENTRY:
Discuss your strategies with the class and record the exact search terms you used in your learning

biggest number of hits
- search for "anteater"

information most relevant to search
- search for "anteater not toy not picture"

information coming only from university sources
- search for "anteater or edu"

It's Tuesday and today started out bad, I shorted out my computers power supply and had to fit a backup one

Anyway after that I'm starting module 4, I want to get ahead as there are a few days over the festive season where I will not be at home to do my uni work

Happy Festive Season to all :)

LOG ENTRY:
- In your learning log record which programs you downloaded and note which (if any) facets you think might prove useful.

1. Adobe's pdf reader
- Adobe's acrobat reader is a great program to use. I know of some people who use it to invoice customers, because they can easily add pics and text together in a pdf. This is handy for their and the customers reference. Acrobat reader is free, but you have to buy an application to make the pdf file. So this is a disadvantage

2. Flash/Shockwave Players
- Adobe's flash is a great program for making interactive animations for websties. However even though flash is great for this, it is invisible to search engines and this is why it is only used sparingly on website's. Despite it not being search engine friendly flash is an amazing web tool and may in the future be used more widely

3. Media Players
- I don't use real one media player and have only used apple quick time a few times and also don't like it. I use windows media player for listening to online radio and viewing DVDs on my computer.

4. Search Manager/Combiners
- I don't use search managers or combiners, but I can see where these applications may be useful, such as if you wanted to expand your search capabilities

5. Bookmark Manager
- I don't use a bookmark manager, but can see where it would be useful, ie if you had lots of bookmarks and wanted to clear out the broken or old links

6. Offline Browser/Copier
- these application's were useful in the past before the onset of broadband, where you were timed on how long you were online. These days this application could be useful in showing sites offline or for making backups

Monday, December 22, 2008

Hi, it's Monday again and the beginning of the 4th week of uni, today I have decided to hit books and do some study

It's a nice sunny day outside and yes I would rather be at the pool or going for a bike ride.

Anyway on to the study

My thoughts on:

- Blogs
I find blogging by using a simple website such as google's blogger to be the most newbie friendly application I have used. Blogs have several uses such as people can share there info and opinions with others. My favourite blogs are on computer technology, as I'm a bit of a nerd. Blogs can also cause problems for whistle blowers and authors who run a blog from work, when the employer finds out

Now you've read about Web 2.0 what applications or "services" do you think are web 2.0 indicative
- I think blogs, html sites such as facebook and instant messaging software are indicative of web 2.0

Whats the difference between HTML and Blinklist ?
- HTML is very plain and simple, links are clear but information could get lost as everything is the same and there is no spacing between information

What are the benefits ?
- HTML could be updated easily, but Blinklist is very easy to navigate, read and search

Which format do you think would be better and why ?
- I personally like the blinklist as it is easy on the eye and to read. It may take a bit more effort to make and maintain thought
Copyright legal issues module 3

have you used images or words on your web page or website that contravene copyright laws?
- Yes I believe it's ok to use the images for non profit and educational use

Would you be in breach of copyright if you put the Curtin logo at the top of your web page for an assignment?

From Curtin Copyright pdf
So What Are Students Allowed To Copy?
Fortunately there are exceptions in the Copyright Act that
allow students to copy limited amounts from some (though
not all) kinds of copyright material, provided you do so only
for non-commercial, educational purposes.

5 most important ‘rules’ for writing online
1. keep it plain and simple

3. design your site for screen resolution 1024 x 768 to accommodate for users with older computers
4. use correct spelling and grammar
5. don't overload the site with bells and whistles

Validation of my index page
This is a link to my basic webpage

http://validator.w3.org/#validate_by_upload

outcome of validation
146 errors
1 warnings

Most of the errors are display errors, such as not using correct html sintax

Today I'm doing module 3 the HTML tutorial

I'm finding it very easy to understand and a good basic refresher as I have made a few websites in the past

I'm not sure why but I really like webpage design compared to computer programing and yes I get a sense of achievement when I finish a page

I find blogging much quicker and easier when using a blog site like googles blogger, compared to HTML coding. Blogging on such a site is much the same as writing a webpage using a WYSIWYG editor

Wednesday, December 17, 2008

Wow, it's been a week since my last post :)

I've been busy upgrading my comp and procrastinating

Tonight I have started reading the notes for module 3 and it's very interesting learning about linear and non linear documents

Really enjoying uni so far :)

Module 2 email task answers

1. What information about a user's email, the origin of a message, and the path it took, can you glean from an email message
- You can find the following information from the email header, user name, domain, location it was sent from and destination address

2. In what cases would you find it useful to use the 'cc', 'bcc' and 'reply all functions of email
- You would use 'cc' and 'bcc' if you wanted to forward your email to more than one recipient

3. In what ways can you ensure that an attachment you send will be easily opened by the receiver
- The best way to make sure a user can open a file you send as an attachment is by asking them if they have the program to open said file. You can also send the email in plain text

4. What sorts of filters or rules do you have set up, and for what purpose?
- I don't have any filters or rules setup in my email program, my ISP filters out most of the spam. I do put received emails in folders to keep them organised

5. How have you organised the folder structure of your email and why?
- I have organised my emails into folders such as 'uni' for uni emails and my other emails are also sorted into specific folders. I did this to make it easier to find certain emails
Another post in my blog :)

Well there's nothing good to watch on TV so I decided to do some more uni work. It's almost addictive and I'm enjoying it much more than I did TAFE

I'm upto Module 2 and the new subject is email

Here is a helpful link to an email tutorial from the curriculum notes, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did
http://liblearn.osu.edu/tutor/les9/
Internet Tools

Use internet tools to do a traceroute to curtin.edu.au from my location. Posted below is a pic of the result

The traceroute above is not a visual one, but it still shows the ip addresses and time of where the data coming to you is going

Visual traceroute is even better than one above as it shows a map and points where data is going

Note: the curtin.edu.au ip address is 134.7.179.53 and there are 21 hops from me to curtin

Average time in ms is 246 from me to curtin.edu.au

Ping Results

Ping to webct.curtin.edu.au from network-tools

Ping to webct.curtin.edu.au from my computer

As shown above the ping time from network-tools was slower than the ping from my computer, this is because the website adds ms to the overall time

My thoughts on the above tasks and information gathering, I found it fairly easy to do and enjoyed it :)

curtin email problem has been solved thanks to fellow student Rob, turns out the curtin email in WebCT is for internal use only

To access the external email account you have to log into the Oasis portal :)
Task 2 use FTP application

I logged into recall.curtin.edu.au FTP site and found the file called readme

the missing word was CAPITALIZATION

I personally find FTP is a great way to upload and download files, I have been using it for managing my websites for ages
Well after making a post in the discussion section and some looking around I found telnet in Windows XP :)

It is accessed by start > run > telnet

I then used ?/ to find the help menu then was able to make contact with curtin library

I searched for and found the author then printed the title to my curtin email address, but it hasn't arrived yet and thinking I'd done something wrong ?

I sent a email to my curtin email and it hasn't arrived either

So I'm waiting patiently for the email to come through :)

I enjoyed starwars in ASCII text and recommend you take a look :)
telnet to towel.blinkenlights.nl

If I remember correctly I used telnet to connect to friends computers for gaming via modems in the old days, it's amazing what can be done with old tech stuff

Net11 Open Uni

Start date 02-12-08

Well I started open uni yesterday and I'm still excited at finally studying at university

It did seem a bit overwhelming at first but the more I read and do things by the numbers the easier it seems

---

My 5 tips to new blogger's

1. use formatting to make important text stand out
2. if you make a mistake you can always edit it by clicking on the edit button
3. always spell check posts in your blog
4. don't get to technical, explain your information for the beginner and pro
5. don't put to much personal information in your blog

and most of all enjoy your self :)
