Well today I finally have time to do more work on my uni stuff :)
On top of everything else I had a 1TB Hard Drive die on me and it took all the data on it when it died, I'm kind of lucky as my Dad sent me a link to an article about Seagate 7200.11 drives failing to boot, because bios can't detect them. So when my drive wasn't seen by bios I new why
I did manage to backup most of my important stuff a few days ago, but it's still a pain loosing that much data
After some reading I found a firmware update for my other 1TB drive and updated it quick smart, hopefully it doesn't die also

Module 5
LOG ENTRY:
make sure you include some reflections on these questions in your learning log:
how might the metaphor of an ‘ecology’ impact on the way you think about, understand or use the Internet?
how are the concepts ‘information’ and ‘communication’ understood within the framework of an ‘information ecology’?
why don’t we talk of a ‘communication ecology’

Module 4
Evaluating the Web
your best 'source' or site from the three you used in the last task
Annotation for website http://www.anteater.com.au/
This website is for 3 pest control companies (Ant-Eater Pest Control • Gladesville Pest Control • Gunn Pest Control), who trade under the name anteater environmental services based in Sydney Australia
- the reliability and authority of the site / source / article
= the site is commercial and I believe the information it contains is correct as incorrect information would be against the law, illegal and detrimental to their business
- the main ideas or subjects discussed in the article
= location and type of service provided
- the purpose for which the site was written (this might include any apparent external interest, intellectual motivation or contextual information)
= the site was written and published to advertise a business or service
LOG ENTRY:
Record your annotation in your learning log
= In my view the above website anteater environmental services, is a business trying to advertise their services to the consumer. I believe all the information in their website is correct and incorrect information would only hurt them both legally and morally
Compare your final analysis and annotation with the material you saved for the last task, and think about these questions (you may wish to discuss these questions in your group)
In terms of your own future use, which 'body ' of information (ie. the original 'snapshot' of the site, or your own, annotated, analytical version) would be most useful to refer back to?
- I refer back to my annotated information that the company is a pest removal service based in Sydney
In term of external users (i.e. if you included this site as a hyperlink or resource on a website) which body of information would best help them judge if the site was useful or of interest to them?
- That this website is useful for people in Sydney who require pest control

Using whatever software or tool you think appropriate, record the following information about those sites:

author, maia@alumni.brown.edu
institution, http://www.brown.edu/
blurb/ summary / screen shot (this can be a direct copy of an appropriate abstract or introductory paragraph on the site: but make sure you record and reference it as such)

Module 4
search engine task
1. Choose your most commonly used Internet search engine and do a search with words of your choosing
LOG ENTRY:
record the first hit and number of hits in your learning log
Google search for anteater
http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=anteater&btnG=Google+Search&meta=
First Result
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anteater
Number of Hits
Results 1 - 10 of about 795,000 for anteater [definition]. (0.05 seconds)
2. Using copernicus or similar, set it up to search at least three search engines (including one that will search the 'deep web') and repeat exactly the same search
LOG ENTRY:
record the number of hits in your learning log, and compare to your first search. What differences did you notice? Why? Which search, on first glance gave you the most promising results?
Copernic Search Result for the word Anteater
http://ws.copernic.com/copern/ws/results/Web/anteater/1/417/topnavigation/Relevance/iq=true/zoom=off/_iceUrlFlag=7?_IceUrl=true
First Result
http://www.calibex.com/anteater-toys/zzcalibex2zB1z0--search-html
Number of Hits
Results: 1 - 20 of 72
3. save at least the first 5 hits of both searches
google 5
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anteater
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_Anteater
http://www.maiaw.com/anteater/
http://www.anteater.com.au/
http://aft.sourceforge.net/
copernic 5

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anteater
http://www.maiaw.com/anteater/
http://aft.sourceforge.net/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_Anteater

Google returned the most hits, but this included links of no use or little help, where as copernic returned less results, but they were on topic and no rubbish links. On first glance copernic gave the best results
Boolean searching task
Taking the same key words of your last search, think about how you would best search for the following:
the biggest number of hits relating to these key words
information most relevant to what you ACTUALLY wanted to look for!
information coming only from university sources
LOG ENTRY:
Discuss your strategies with the class and record the exact search terms you used in your learning
biggest number of hits
- search for "anteater"
information most relevant to search
- search for "anteater not toy not picture"
information coming only from university sources
- search for "anteater or edu"
